Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, who were involved in a heated exchange after the match in Lucknow, have been fined 100 percent of their match fees for a level 2 breach of the IPL Code of Conduct.
Both Kohli and Gambhir were found in violation of Article 2.21, which covers: (a) public acts of misconduct; (b) unruly public behaviour; and (c) inappropriate comments which are detrimental to the interests of the game. Meanwhile, Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq was fined 50 percent of his match fee for a level 1 breach of the same Article.
Kohli was rather animated on the field during LSG’s batting innings with his aggressive celebrations after dismissals, and he even put his finger over his mouth, shushing the crowd at the Ekana Stadium following the dismissal of Krunal Pandya. This was perhaps in response to Gambhir’s similar act at the Chinnaswamy Stadium after LSG’s one-run victory.
After the match when the players were shaking hands, Naveen was seen having a conversation with Kohli that wasn’t too friendly. Naveen and Kohli were involved in a heated exchange earlier too on the field after the former’s dismissal, while the RCB batter was also seen in a heated conversation with Amit Mishra on the field.
Kyle Mayers also spoke to Kohli when Gambhir cut him off and then the team mentor approached the RCB batter himself. KL Rahul and Avesh Khan tried to keep Gambhir away but the former India opener eventually got near Kohli. Kohli initially tried to calm Gambhir but soon the situation became intense and the other players had to separate the two.
This isn’t the first time that Kohli and Gambhir have been involved in an altercation. The two were involved in an ugly exchange back in 2013 when Gambhir was the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and Kohli was leading RCB.
LSG lost their home game to RCB by 18 runs, getting bowled out for 108 in response to the visiting team’s 126/9. Skipper Rahul missed a major portion of the game due to a hip-flexor injury and was the last to bat, coming to the middle in only the penultimate over. RCB are fifth on the points table while LSG are third, with both teams having won five out of 9 games each.
