Punjab Police recently booked three people for allegedly operating an illegal online gambling platform Diamond Exchange. These operators were confirmed to have the backing of popular gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
According to the Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the operatives used to lure people to join Diamond Exchange with fake promises of higher than normal profits at significantly lower platform fees than others.
After receiving reports, the state’s special operation cell in Mohali, Chandigarh conducted a raid arresting three individuals identified as Rohit Bharadwaj, Mohit Bharadwaj and Arjun Thakur.
“Initially, the victims would win some rewards, but would then start losing money. The accused would then offer them lakhs of rupees on credit so that they can continue betting on the platform,” Yadav said, according to NDTV.
People were also able to avail credit on the gambling platform which charged a hefty amount of interest. People who were not able to pay back were contacted and threatened through their gangster associates in jail and abroad, the DGP added.
The police seized roughly Rs 14.78 lakh from Rohit Bhardwaj along with mobile phones and other evidences. Furthermore, the police also found several payment gateways and bank accounts that were used to transfer the money and are now frozen.
Wolf777 not included in banned websites list by MeitY
Diamond Exchange is owned by Dubai-based fugitive Rakesh Rajdev alias Rakesh Rajkot alias RR, who is also currently under investigation of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for running a betting racket using his other illegal betting platform Wolf777.
Earlier in April, ED raided a fintech company that was being used as a front for running an illegal betting racket involving Wolf777. The police found over Rs 49 crore spread across 150 bank accounts that were frozen under the provisions of PMLA, 2002.
Surprisingly, Wolf777 was also not included in the recent list of banned website by MeitY earlier with others and was operating openly until it was ultimately banned. As of now it uses a different domain to operate and surrogate brands for advertisements.
