Professor MH Jawahirullah, the State President of the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi party (Humanist People’s Party) in Tamil Nadu has raised concerns about the mention of card game lessons in the school mathematics curriculum.

In a statement issued by him, he expressed concerns regarding the use of examples like lottery tickets and card decks in mathematics textbooks, reported Asianet News.

The sixth-grade lesson on integers in the mathematics curriculum uses a deck of cards as an example to teach mathematical concepts. Similarly, lessons related to card decks were also found in the syllabus for tenth-grade students under the topic of statistics and facts.

The Maths lesson titled Integers in Class 6 aims to teach addition and subtraction with whole numbers in a game format. ABP Live mentioned that Political leaders, teachers and educationists requested the removal of the chapter, mentioning that addition and subtraction can be taught through various methods, other than through decks of cards.

There were similar lessons in class 10 maths too. The school education department of the Tamil Nadu government removed it last year and made sure that those subjects were not included in the question papers.

Jawahirullah said that, while there are various methods to teach integers in mathematics, introducing card games to students is not appropriate mainly because of the dangers associated with gambling related to card games. He said that because of the prevalence of online gambling games like rummy and poker, there is a need to avoid promoting such activities to students.

Presently, online rummy and other gambling games are prevalent in Tamil Nadu. In such a context, including card games in the school syllabus is not appropriate. Recently Tamil Nadu has also witnessed a rise in suicides due to gambling related debts.

In his statement, Jawahirullah urged the school education department to immediately remove the card game lessons from the sixth standard textbooks. He highlighted the importance of considering the future welfare of students and ensuring that the curriculum aligns with educational standards and values.
