Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, wrote on LinkedIn the importance of recognizing gaming as a viable career choice. He asserted that gaming has evolved and can’t considered merely as a pastime, but should be acknowledged as a legitimate profession deserving validation from both parents and educational institutions.

The Business Today wrote that Kamath’s advocacy coincides with the gaming industry’s role in global markets. With advancing technologies and a growing interest in interactive entertainment, the sector has experienced growth in recent years, with projections indicating continued expansion.

Despite its potential, aspiring Indian gamers often face obstacles due to a lack of support from families and educational establishments. Traditional views perceive gaming as a hobby or pastime, ignoring the opportunities the sector has.

Kamath argues that neglecting the gaming sector’s value could be damaging. A major change can happen if educational institutions invest time and resources in understanding and legitimizing emerging career paths within gaming.

He emphasizes the need for adaptation. In his post he wrote, “What worked in the last 20 years will likely not work in the next 20, Interactive forms of entertainment are increasingly taking market share, let’s all give the gaming industry the importance it deserves”

Over the past decade, gaming has transformed from a hobby to a profession, offering opportunities in eSports, game design, development, and live streaming. Gaming provides multiple opportunities to the new generations of innovative, tech-savvy individuals.

India’s online gaming industry has experienced growth, reaching approximately 220 billion rupees in 2023, with projections suggesting further development to over 388 billion rupees by 2026. Experts anticipate growth, estimating the industry to reach 33,243 crore rupees by 2028, with a consistent annual growth rate of 15%.
