Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed confidence in India’s potential to lead the international gaming industry. In a recent interview with NDTV, PM Modi spoke about India’s startup ecosystem, which currently has over 1.5 lakh startups and more than 100 unicorns, as a major driving force for this potential. He mentioned that many leaders in the gaming sector are young professionals aged 20-25 from tier 2 cities, showcasing significant promise and leadership capabilities.
Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of the creative economy, noting its rapid growth and substantial impact on the country’s overall economy. He stressed the need to support young creators and gamers, acknowledging their role in shaping the future of the gaming industry globally.
In April, PM Modi engaged in a discussion with a group of seven prominent Indian gamers, including Animesh Agarwal, Mithilesh Patankar, Payal Dhare, Naman Mathur, and Anshu Bisht. These gamers shared their perspectives on the socio-economic implications of gaming during their conversation with the Prime Minister. Agarwal and Patankar later described the interaction as “enlightening” on social media.
During his meeting with gamers, PM Modi experienced various gaming platforms first-hand, including virtual reality, mobile, PC and console gaming. This engagement reflects the government’s interest in the gaming industry and its recognition of its economic potential.
The gaming community in India is substantial, with an estimated 450 to 550 million fans. The industry has seen impressive growth, generating $3.1 billion in FY23, a 19% increase from the previous year.
Game developers who participated in the meeting expressed optimism about the Prime Minister’s vision, believing that his support will positively impact the gaming industry in India. Modi assured the gaming creators of his administration’s commitment to encouraging the gaming and esports ecosystem, pledging to provide assistance and create conducive environments for the industry’s growth.
