Ricky Ponting and the Delhi Capitals have mutually decided to part ways, as confirmed by the IPL team on Saturday. Ponting, appointed as head coach of the team back in 2018, could not lead them to an IPL title during his seven-year tenure.

With Ponting’s exit and the mega auction approaching, Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly is now a leading contender for the head coach position. Recently, when asked about the possibility of taking on the role, Ganguly also dropped a big hint.

“I have to plan for next year’s IPL. I want to win the IPL for Delhi Capitals once. The mega auction is next year, and hence I have started planning from now on. Geoffrey Boycott was right, as Ponting has not been able to take the franchise forward in the past 7 years,” Ganguly said in an interview with Bengali newspaper Aajkal.

“I have to speak with the franchise and ask them to look at Indian coaches. I will be the head coach. Let’s see how I perform. Will need to recruit some new players,” he added.

The DC co-owners, JSW and GMR group, are set to meet either at the end of this month or the beginning of next month to chart the team’s future course. The decision on appointing the next head coach is expected to be made during this meeting.
