Former South African bowler Morne Morkel is a strong contender for the position of bowling coach for the Indian cricket team, following a recommendation from Gautam Gambhir.

As the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir was given the liberty to assemble his own coaching staff, which is why he has also appointed Abhishek Nayar as the assistant coach.

Morne Morkel and Gautam Gambhir worked together during the latter’s time with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL, while Abhishek Nayar worked alongside Gambhir at KKR in IPL 2024.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is expected to officially announce Morne Morkel as the Indian cricket team’s bowling coach following the Sri Lanka series.

This also implies that Morne Morkel will be leaving the Lucknow Super Giants, and the team will need to find a new bowling coach for the 2025 IPL season.

Morne Morkel has been with LSG since the team’s debut in the IPL in 2022 and has performed exceptionally well. It will be intriguing to see who will take over his role at the Lucknow Super Giants.
