The newly appointed head coach of the Indian cricket team has commented on the decision to omit Ravindra Jadeja from the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series.

Gautam Gambhir will assume his role starting with the Sri Lanka series. The team will face Sri Lanka in three T20Is and three ODIs from July 26 to August 27, with departure set for July 22.

Gautam Gambhir, during a pre-departure press conference, answered some questions about the Indian squads for the series, and provided insights into several players as well.

When questioned about Ravindra Jadeja‘s exclusion from the ODI squad, he explained that the management wants to give Axar Patel a chance,  which is why Jadeja has been ‘rested’ for this series.

Here’s what Gautam Gambhir said:

“It would have been pointless to take him and Axar for this short series. Either of them wouldn’t have played all three games. There is a big Test season coming up, he is set to feature in a lot of games. He hasn’t been dropped, very important.”

The chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who was also present at the press-conference added:

“I think we should have clarified this when we announced the squad. He hasn’t been dropped (but rested). There are a lot of Test series coming up, and he will be playing a lot of those.”

Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja, along with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, retired from T20 internationals last month following their victory in the T20 World Cup 2024.
