The Punjab Kings are likely to part ways with Trevor Bayliss ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, as they are in the hunt for an Indian head coach.
According to a report, they are now considering Wasim Jaffer, former Indian opener who has served as the batting coach and consultant for the Punjab Kings in the past, as the next head coach of the team.
Punjab Kings, still looking for their maiden IPL win, are known for making significant changes after every season, and they are about to do the same before 2025.
Wasim Jaffer’s Coaching Stints
Wasim Jaffer has a rich history in coaching. He served as head coach of Uttarakhand and Odisha. Later, he was also the head coach of the Bangladesh under-19 team. Apart from these roles, he has had two tenures with Punjab Kings as the batting consultant. This time, he is likely to return to the team as the head coach.
Punjab Kings’ Hunt for Captain
Apart from the head coach, Punjab Kings have a lot of work to do ahead of IPL 2025, including shortlisting captaincy candidates, as Shikhar Dhawan has looked far from his best in the last couple of seasons. In IPL 2024, he did not lead the team; instead, Sam Curran was appointed as the captain.
The IPL 2025 mega auction will be a great opportunity for Punjab Kings to bring in an experienced player to lead the team. There are reports that Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma are likely to part ways with Mumbai Indians. If that happens, Punjab Kings will have a great opportunity to rope in one of these two players.
