In the latest turn of events, Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia had a heated argument with Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shahrukh Khan during the IPL owners’ meeting with BCCI.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the argument took place over the number of retentions. While Punjab Kings want fewer retentions, Shahrukh Khan wanted more.
Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India organized a meeting with all ten IPL franchise owners on July 31 to discuss the rules and guidelines regarding the IPL 2025 mega auction, where they also discussed the number of retentions.
The winners of 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders, want to keep their core team intact and hence favor more retentions. In contrast, Punjab Kings want to build a squad from scratch and therefore prefer fewer retentions.
There is no doubt that Punjab Kings is one of the franchises that likes to do a lot of chopping and changing before every option. Many believe that this is one of the main reasons they have not won an IPL trophy so far.
However, the final decision will be made by the BCCI, and they are likely to announce it soon, after which the teams will be given a deadline to announce their retentions.
