The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will meet with all IPL franchise owners on July 31 to discuss the retention rules and other guidelines for the IPL 2025 mega auction. This meeting will be crucial in setting the framework for the upcoming auction.

This will be the first mega auction since IPL 2022. Reports indicate that teams have asked the BCCI to consider holding the mega auction every five years instead of every three years. This change could allow teams more time to develop and strengthen their squads.

One of the key topics at the meeting will be the number of players each team can retain. This is important because teams want to keep the players they have developed over time and built their strategies around.

How many retentions are allowed in IPL 2025?

According to a report in the Times of India, the BCCI is considering allowing teams to retain five to six players, along with one Right to Match (RTM) player. This is an increase from the previous mega auction before IPL 2022, where teams could retain up to four players. This change would help teams maintain a strong core of players.

Teams Allowed to Retain Uncapped Players

There are also reports that teams might be allowed to retain uncapped players in an additional slot. The BCCI will make a final decision on this. This move would enable teams to keep emerging talents who have not yet played at the international level.
