India is up against Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series on Friday, August 2, at Pallekele Stadium. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, returning to action after nearly a month following the T-20 World Cup 2024 victory, announced the playing XI, which notably excluded Rishabh Pant.

The reason Rishabh Pant is not playing in the first ODI against Sri Lanka is that the team management chose the reliable KL Rahul at number five, considering his consistent performance in that position.

Although Rishabh Pant has impressive ODI stats, KL Rahul’s numbers are even better and he has been more consistent with both bat and gloves. He had an outstanding campaign in the 2023 World Cup, delivering several key performances at number five.

Among the notable selections are Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar, who have rarely been seen in this format. Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh will lead the pace attack for India, while Axar Patel joins as an additional all-rounder.

India’s Playing XI vs Sri Lanka:

Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (w), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj
