Andre Russell, the West Indies all-rounder, has pointed out that it’s not the ‘lack of money’ but rather a ‘lack of interest’ that is keeping young players away from participating in Test cricket. 

This comment from Andre Russell comes amidst his England’s The Hundred stint, where he is playing for London Spirit after plying his services in the Major League Cricket 2024.   

Although Pooran, Powell, and Pollard are well-known for their dynamic performances in franchise cricket, none of them have played Test cricket for West Indies, with Russell having made just one Test appearance way back in 2010. 

While it has often been claimed that a lack of money is a primary reason for the disinterest in Test cricket among West Indies players, Russell argues that other factors are also contributing to this issue.

“I don’t think it’s the money, I don’t think money is the issue,” he told Britain’s PA news agency.

“Based on the amount of T20 and leagues around the world, I think a lot of players are just not interested in playing Tests. I’m always excited watching the other West Indian batters, especially when they’re hitting boundary after boundary.”

‘Test cricket isn’t my cookie’ – Andre Russell

Russell further added that if a big stage comes in Test cricket, the youngsters would be more than happy to contribute.

“As long as you can do well from contracts outside your nation I think they are going to grab that opportunity but everyone wants to play on the big stage.”

“So, if the big stage comes in Test cricket, I know youngsters will be happy to play. I just don’t think it’s about money or anything like that,” he added. 

Andre Russell further admitted that his body is not suited for a format that spans five days. 

“Red-ball cricket is not my cookie, I don’t think my body will keep up with Test cricket. But those in the team at the moment are fit enough and taking on the challenge,” Russell concluded.
