Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time IPL champions, are reportedly keen on investing in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
According to informed individuals, the India Cements sports division along with its workforce will be integrated into the Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd. (CSKCL) IPL franchise.
Entrepreneur N Srinivasan is selling a stake in India Cements to UltraTech Cement, though the IPL team is not included in the transaction. Rupa Gurunath, his daughter and full-time director of India Cements, is expected to become a board member of the IPL franchise.
According to the Economic Times, a CSK official mentioned that the franchise was exploring the economic viability of purchasing a Women’s Premier League team.
“CSK is currently studying the financial viability… and the experience of the other five IPL franchises that took part last year,” said an executive to Economic Times.
Notably, about two years ago, when the Women’s Premier League was announced, Chennai Super Kings owner N Srinivasan stated that they had no interest in investing in the league.
Instead they bought teams in the overseas leagues like Major League Cricket (MLC) namely, Texas Super Kings and SA20, where they are known as Joburg Super Kings.
The Women’s Premier League launched with five teams: Delhi Capitals Women, Mumbai Indians Women, Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Giants. Mumbai Indians Women emerged victorious in the inaugural season, and RCB Women recently won the second season.
The mega auction for WPL is scheduled for after the 2025 season. Therefore, even if the Chennai Super Kings are likely to secure a team, they will have to wait another year for the mega auction to occur before the introduction of an additional team is possible.
