Gautam Gambhir has taken on the role of head coach for the Indian cricket team, following the end of Rahul Dravid’s term after the T20 World Cup 2024.

Although offered a chance to extend his contract, Rahul Dravid opted out, stating his need to prioritize family time. As a result, the BCCI looked for alternative candidates.

Gautam Gambhir, who served as the mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders and guided them to the IPL 2024 title, was recognized by the BCCI as the ideal candidate to succeed Rahul Dravid.

Meanwhile, former Indian fast bowler Joginder Sharma believes that Gautam Gambhir may not stay as the head coach of the Indian cricket team for a long time due to his outspoken nature.

“Gautam Gambhir is the one to manage the team, but I believe that Gautam Gambhir will not be able to stay for a long time,” Joginder said on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast.

“This is because Gautam Gambhir has his own approach to decision-making. There might be instances where he disagrees with a player, and I’m not referring to Virat Kohli specifically. Often, Gautam Gambhir’s decisions may not be well-received by others,” he added.

‘Gautam Gambhir Isn’t A Person Who Flatters’

The 2007 World Cup hero further praised the Indian head coach, stating that he does not engage in sycophancy; instead, he is known for his candid approach and always performs his duties with utmost sincerity.

“Gautam Gambhir speaks directly. He is not someone who will go to anyone. Gautam Gambhir is not a person who flatters. We are the ones who give him credit. He does his work, does it sincerely, and does it with great honesty,” Joginder said.

The ongoing Sri Lanka tour is Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as the head coach of the team. The Men in Blue have already clean-swept the Lankan Lions 3-0 in the three-match T20I series, while the first ODI of the three-match series ended in a tie.
