Jeffrey Vandersay’s mesmerizing six-wicket performance overshadowed Rohit Sharma’s fierce half-century, leading Sri Lanka to a stirring 32-run victory over India in the second ODI on Sunday.
As the main wrecker, Vandersay led Sri Lanka to defend 240, dismissing India for 208. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill’s impressive opening partnership of 97 was cut short by Vandersay, who took the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma.
The leg-spinner then quickly dismissed Gill, Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul, leading Sri Lanka to a 1-0 series lead. This stellar performance has thrust him into the limelight, highlighting his skills on the international stage.
Who is Jeffrey Vandersay?
Jeffrey Vandersay debuted internationally for Sri Lanka on June 30, 2015, in a T20I match against Pakistan at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium. He has taken seven wickets in 14 T20Is, scoring 20 runs. His last T20I appearance was against India in Dharamsala on February 27, 2022.
The 34-year-old cricketer debuted in ODIs against New Zealand at Hagley Oval on December 28, 2015, and has taken 33 wickets in 22 matches to date. He has also appeared in one Test match for Sri Lanka, against Australia in Galle in 2022, where he claimed a single wicket.
However, his journey has been fraught with challenges, including injuries and stiff competition from other spinners. In 2018, Vandersay faced suspension by Sri Lanka Cricket.
In July of that year, he received a one-year suspension and a fine of 20 percent of his annual contract fee for failing to report to the team hotel on time after a night out during the West Indies tour in St. Lucia.
