Former cricket captain Mashrafe Mortaza’s residence was set on fire by protestors in Bangladesh on Monday (August 5), amid escalating unrest.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country in the wake of the continuing turmoil. The Army chief, meanwhile, said that the military would help form an interim government to run Bangladesh.
Mortaza, an MP with the ruling Awami League party, was targeted by protesters for his lack of response to the alleged “massacres and mass arrests of students” in Bangladesh. Visuals show his residence being defaced and set on fire by the angry crowd.
Mortaza led the Bangladesh cricket team in 117 matches across various formats, the most by any player from his country. Over his lengthy career, he took 390 international wickets and scored 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is.
After retiring from cricket, Mortaza entered politics in 2018 by joining the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina, and secured a parliamentary seat from the Narail-2 constituency.
