Fans may soon see their favourite retired players like Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag back on the field, as the BCCI is considering launching a Legends League, where retired players from around the world will participate.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, some retired players have requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to organize their own Legends League, similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL), where all retired players can participate.
Notably, there are several leagues played worldwide where retired players like Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, and Yuvraj Singh, along with other retired players from around the globe, participate. Examples include the World Championship of Legends and Legends League Cricket.
However, the BCCI, the richest cricket board in the world, has yet to launch their own premier league for retired players. Now, it appears that the idea is on the BCCI’s roadmap, and they may launch it soon.
The report further added that the players want the Legends League to be organized similarly to the IPL, with an auction process and teams divided based on cities.
When Will the Legends League Start?
With the IPL 2025 mega auction scheduled to take place, the chances of the Legends League starting this year are slim. However, if the BCCI puts in the effort and assesses all the factors, the Legends League could potentially start next year.
