The Australian fast-bowling star Mitchell Starc believes that the Border Gavaskar Trophy, played between Australia and India, has reached a level of competitiveness that rivals the intensity of the Ashes.
India is set to tour Australia later this year for their marquee Test series of the season – the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Over the past two decades, India and Australia have developed a fierce rivalry, making the BGT one of India’s most important Test series.
Here’s what Mitchell Starc said while speaking to Wide World Sports Website:
“Being five matches now it’s probably right on par with an Ashes series. We always want to win every game at home and we know India are a very strong team.”
Australia Eager to Outperform India
India and Australia currently occupy the top spots on the World Test Championship points table and are once again likely to face each other in the final, scheduled for 2025 at Lord’s. India has reached two WTC finals but has yet to claim the title. Last year, Australia outperformed India in the final at The Oval in London.
Australia last claimed the BGT title in 2014, after which India has dominated the series under the leadership of Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Rohit Sharma. In the most recent BGT, held in India in 2023, India defeated Australia 3-1, securing a spot in the WTC final.
The Test series between India and Australia is set to start on November 22 and will finish in January with the New Year’s Test.
