The Indian cricket team recently suffered a defeat in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Although the first ODI ended in a tie, India lost the remaining two games.
One of the most surprising and shocking aspects was that most Indian batters, apart from captain Rohit Sharma, struggled against the spin bowlers of the Sri Lankan team.
Former Netherlands allrounder Ryan ten Doeschate, recently appointed as the assistant coach of the Indian cricket team, expressed surprise, stating he never expected the Indian batsmen to struggle against spin in a subcontinent nation.
“One of the challenges I wasn’t expecting and I kind of overlooked is the playing of spin by Indian batters. We got undone in Sri Lanka. The mindset of India has been such that they’ve been so desperate to do well overseas,” Ten Doeschate told TalkSport Cricket.
He also pointed out that while the Indian cricket team is keen and driven to perform well in overseas environments, such as England and Australia, they seem to have slipped in their spin-playing abilities, something they were once very strong at.
“The focus has moved to doing well in Australia, England [so] that we’ve kind of let playing spin, which was always a strength of the Indian team, fall back a little bit. That’s one thing I’m looking forward to helping with, getting to that position where Indians are the best players of spin in the world again,” he added.
BCCI Calls on Indian Cricketers for Duleep Trophy 2024
The Indian cricket team is scheduled to play a Test series against Bangladesh in September, and it’s clear that the batters need plenty of practice against spin. Hence, the BCCI has included many centrally contracted players in the Duleep Trophy 2024.
Some of the big names participating in the Duleep Trophy 2024 include KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Notably, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah have opted out of the tournament.
