New Zealand will play a one-off Test against Afghanistan in Greater Noida from September 9-13. However, currently it’s raining heavily in Delhi, which has dampened the pitch and groundsmen have to use table fans to dry the surface.

Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has assigned this ground to Afghanistan for their one-off Test match against New Zealand. With plenty of time before the game, conditions are likely to improve significantly.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Test captain, Hashmatullah Shahidi, made a light-hearted comment about the Noida pitch conditions, especially after learning that the stadium lacks a proper drainage and cover system.

“Boys, we should have brought our swim gear. No way we are going to play here. Good place to swim,” skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Shahidi further added:

“Sir hum logo ko aadat hai, but New Zealand walon ko kya jawab doge (We are used to it, but what would you say to the New Zealand team management?).”

Afghanistan Suffers Big Blow Ahead of New Zealand Test

Ahead of the big challenge, Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan has opted for a break to heal from a back injury he recently sustained while participating in a domestic tournament in Afghanistan.

Rashid Khan has struggled with back issues in the past. Following the ICC World Cup 2023, he underwent surgery for a back injury that sidelined him for four months. He returned to action in a T20I series against Ireland in March.

The star spinner then guided his team to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. Although they lost to South Africa, it marked their first appearance in the knockout stages of an ICC event.
