Nicholas Pooran, the powerful hitter from Trinbago Knight Riders, smashed the first half-century of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024, surpassing Chris Gayle to establish a new world record. 

During the first match of the season for the Trinbago Knight Riders against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Pooran joined the game at the end of the fourth over, and reached half-century from just 21 balls.  

Nicholas Pooran was dismissed for 97 off 43 balls, caught in the deep off Anrich Nortje, with the scoreboard at 211-4 in 17.4 overs. Notably, 82 of his runs were scored in boundaries, comprising seven fours and nine sixes.

During the 12th over, Pooran, by going down on one knee and smashing Tabraiz Shamsi’s ball over the leg side fence, hit his sixth six of the innings and reached his half-century off just 21 balls. 

This milestone set a new world record, marking his 136th six of the year in T20 cricket and breaking Chris Gayle’s record of 135 sixes in a calendar year. He has represented a total of 8 teams this year.
