After Mumbai Indians removed Rohit Sharma from the captaincy in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, rumours have been swirling that Rohit is unhappy with the management and may leave the franchise before 2025.
It was only after this that reports began to surface about other teams being interested in Rohit Sharma, should he enter the mega auction. Lucknow Super Giants, in particular, have made headlines for their strong interest in him recently.
Jonty Rhodes, the fielding coach of Lucknow Super Giants, has recently addressed the potential of Rohit Sharma coming to the team for IPL 2025.
Rhodes, who has closely observed the experienced batter’s development during their stint together with the five-time IPL champions, had only positive words for the dynamic opener.
“I mean, for a long time at Mumbai Indians, I felt I had the best job in the world. I got to watch Rohit Shama practice and play cricket. He is so elegant,” Rhodes told ANI.
While Jonty Rhodes holds Rohit Sharma in high regard as a player, he is unsure whether Rohit’s addition to Lucknow Super Giants would change the team’s fortunes and bring success.
“I mean, there’s the balance of teams, who’s in the side. I love watching Rohit Sharma bat, but I’m not saying he must come in and replace, and then suddenly we change our setup. So whatever, as I said, whatever happens, who is ever there? I’ll be doing my best to support,” he added.
Uncertainty Surrounds KL Rahul’s Retention
Additionally, reports suggest that the team is still deliberating on whether to retain their captain, KL Rahul, after a disappointing IPL 2024 season. Lucknow Super Giants’ owner, Sanjiv Goenka, recently met with KL Rahul in Kolkata to discuss the matter.
During the latest press conference, where Sanjiv Goenka announced Zaheer Khan as the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants, he mentioned that Rahul remains part of the Super Giants family but refrained from commenting on player retentions, stating that there’s still plenty of time for that.
