Yash Dayal, the left-arm pacer, admitted that he felt bad after getting MS Dhoni out during the virtual quarter-final between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2024.
With both teams battling for the final playoff spot, the match stretched to the last over, where CSK required 17 runs to secure qualification and 35 to win, with Dhoni facing Dayal.
The ex-CSK captain struck the first ball for a six, but Dayal smartly responded with a deceptive slower ball, dismissing Dhoni on the second delivery. This sealed CSK’s fate as RCB secured a 27-run victory and thwarted CSK’s qualification hopes.
In a conversation with Jatin Sapru on the ‘Roaring with the Lions’ podcast, Dayal revealed that he felt bad about dismissing MS Dhoni, as he feared it might be the legend’s final match in the cash-rich league.
“I felt bad after dismissing him. Because I don’t know or care what people say but the frustration with which he left the ground, it was like you don’t know whether he will return or not. Will we ever see him again on the ground. It was a moment where a lot of things were going through my head. I got a breather, a bit of relief,” Yash Dayal said (via YouTube).
During the same podcast, Yash Dayal shared Virat Kohli’s advice to avoid giving pace or bowling into Dhoni’s hitting zone. Dayal ended his spell with figures of 2/42 in four overs, taking the key wicket of Daryl Mitchell before dismissing Dhoni in the final over.
“With 11 runs needed off 4, I was like why I am even looking at the scoreboard. I shouldn’t. I should just focus on my bowling. Shardul bhai was on strike. Virat bhai said, ‘Don’t give pace, don’t bowl right onto his bat,” Dayal said.
However, RCB’s journey ended with their defeat to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Eliminator.
