R Ashwin, back on his familiar turf at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium, reaffirmed his importance to the Indian cricket team by smashing his sixth century in Test cricket.
Ashwin reached his century in just 108 balls, hitting 10 boundaries and 2 sixes. He came to the crease with India struggling at 144 for 6 after a top-order collapse, with KL Rahul getting out for 12.
Ashwin raced to his half-century in just 58 balls and kept up the momentum as he and Jadeja pushed India past the 300-run mark, putting them in control for the first time on day one.
He did have a few nervy moments, with a couple of edges flying past the slips, before calmly reaching his hundred with a single. He remained unbeaten for 102 runs from 112 balls at the end of the day’s play.
In the post-match interview, Ashwin revealed that he wanted to adopt an aggressive, fearless approach similar to Rishabh Pant’s, which is why he played such an attacking innings.
Here’s what R Ashwin said:
“I’ve worked on my batting. I wanted to play positive cricket like Rishabh Pant does.”
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant, back in Test cricket after a gap of almost two years, delivered an impactful knock, scoring 39 runs from 52 balls with six boundaries.
