R Ashwin has joined Sachin Tendulkar on the list of batters who have scored back-to-back Test hundreds at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. He reached this achievement during the opening day of the first Test against Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Bangladesh on Thursday, September 19.

Ashwin recorded his maiden Test hundred at home in 2021 with an innings of 106 in the second Test at Chepauk against England. Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar made centuries in three successive Tests at Chennai: 155 vs Australia in 1998, 136 vs Pakistan in 1999, and 126 vs Australia in 2001.*

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most Test centuries at Chepauk with 5. Sunil Gavaskar is second with three centuries. Ashwin, Allan Border, Kapil Dev, Duleep Mendis, Virender Sehwag, Andrew Strauss, and Gundappa Viswanath each have two Test hundreds at the venue.

Ashwin displayed great fluency throughout his innings, reaching fifty in 58 balls and then his century in 108 deliveries. By the end of the opening day, he remained unbeaten on 102 off 112 balls, including 10 fours and 2 sixes. 

Jadeja supported Ashwin with an unbeaten 86 off 117 balls, including 10 fours and 2 sixes. Together, they guided India to a total of 339 for six. Ashwin has a strong record at Chepauk, amassing 331 runs from five matches at an average of 55.16.
