Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg recently shared his views on Virat Kohli’s chances of matching Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 centuries in Test cricket.

Hogg expressed his doubts, suggesting that Kohli may not be able to surpass Tendulkar’s incredible tally of runs in Test cricket, given the recent dip in his performance in red-ball cricket.

Kohli’s Decline in Red-Ball Cricket

Sachin Tendulkar remains the leading run-scorer in Test cricket with 15,921 runs in 200 matches. In comparison, Kohli has accumulated 8,848 runs from 113 Tests.

Hogg believes that Kohli has lost some of his momentum in the longer format, which has affected his performance over the years.

He emphasized that Kohli would need to return to his best form in India’s current Test season to have any chance of getting closer to Tendulkar’s record.

Hogg stated on his YouTube channel:

“I don’t think Virat is going to get there now. I just don’t think Virat is going to get there. I think he’s lost his momentum, and the momentum that he’s lost has been for a number of years now. He’s got to turn around in the next 10 Test matches, or he’s going to drop off.”

Kohli’s Recent Struggles

India’s ongoing Test season began with a two-match home series against Bangladesh. Kohli struggled in the first Test in Chennai, scoring only 6 and 17 runs in his two innings. He will look to bounce back in the second Test, starting on September 27 in Kanpur.

Joe Root’s Rising Form and Potential to Break Records

While Hogg doubts Kohli’s chances of catching Tendulkar, he sees Joe Root as a potential challenger to the legendary Indian’s records. Root, who has been in phenomenal form over the past few years, currently sits at number six on the list of all-time top run-scorers in Test cricket, just 3,519 runs behind Tendulkar.

Despite having played 54 fewer Tests than Tendulkar, Root’s consistency has led many former players to believe he could break the record.

Hogg highlighted Root’s achievements, stating:

“Joe Root has 146 Test matches with 12,000 runs. Sachin Tendulkar made nearly 16,000 runs in 200 Test matches. That’s 4,000 runs in 66 Tests. I think Joe Root can go close to toppling that.” He further added, “Watch out, Joe Root is on the move to beat Sachin Tendulkar. I think quietly he’ll have that in the back of his mind to try and topple that little unique stat.”
