The much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is expected to take place by the end of this year. Mega auctions are always exciting, as they can lead to surprising team combinations.
One key challenge is deciding which players to retain. According to reports from The Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may allow franchises to retain up to five players ahead of this auction. Interestingly, the Right To Match (RTM) option, which was previously available, might be excluded this time.
Auction Likely in November or December
As per IANS, the IPL 2025 auction is expected to be scheduled for either late November or early December. BCCI sources revealed that the official rules and regulations regarding the auction will be announced soon, possibly within a few days.
Historically, mega auctions in the IPL are spaced out over four-year intervals. The first major auction in the last decade took place in 2014, followed by another in 2018. Notably, the 2018 auction marked the return of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings after their two-year suspensions.
Two-Day Auction Format Likely
Like the auctions held in recent years, the 2025 mega auction is expected to span over two days. This format allows for a more detailed bidding process. The 2021 auction was originally scheduled for 2020 but had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, leading teams to extend player contracts for an additional year.
Retention Debate Among Franchises
In the last mega auction in 2022, teams were allowed to retain a maximum of four players. With the current cycle nearing its end, there has been some debate among franchises over how many players should be retained. Some teams are pushing for an increased cap of up to eight players, while others are comfortable with the limit of four or five. The decision on this will have a major impact on the strategies for all IPL teams.
