The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially revealed the retention rules for the highly anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction. With big changes and updates, these new guidelines are set to impact how teams approach the auction and retention process.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of the key points announced by the BCCI.
1. Retention Limits
Franchises will be able to retain a maximum of five capped players—this includes both Indian and overseas players. In addition to this, teams can also retain up to two uncapped players. This means that teams will have the flexibility to keep a strong mix of experienced and emerging talent while preparing for the mega auction.
2. 120-Crore Purse
Each franchise will have a Rs 120 crore purse for the 2025 auction. This increase in the salary cap offers teams more financial flexibility when it comes to building competitive squads. However, retaining players comes with a cost, as retaining five players will consume a significant portion of the total purse.
3. Match Fees for Players
A new introduction to IPL 2025 is the concept of match fees. Players will now receive separate match fees in addition to their auction price, giving an added incentive to perform well. This change is expected to further boost player motivation and add more excitement to the tournament.
4. Ban for Withdrawal After Selection
In a strict move, the BCCI has also introduced a two-year ban for any player who withdraws from the IPL after being picked in the auction. This is aimed at ensuring player commitment and reducing last-minute withdrawals, which can disrupt team plans.
5. Mega Auction Registration Mandatory
A key change is that players who wish to participate in any future mini-auctions must first register for the mega auction. This rule will ensure a clear player pool and avoid confusion in the auction process.
