The excitement surrounding the IPL auction is heating up, even though it is still a few weeks away. As franchises prepare their strategies, the focus is on the upcoming retention rules. The IPL Governing Council is set to meet soon, and these rules will be a key topic of discussion.

IPL 2025 Mega Auction Retention Details

According to a recent report from ESPNCricinfo, each of the ten IPL franchises may be allowed to retain up to five players. Additionally, they could hold one Right to Match (RTM) card. The RTM card was last seen in the IPL 2018 mega auction. It gives teams the ability to keep players they released by matching the highest bid for them during the auction.

There are still some unanswered questions. The report did not specify how many Indian players can be retained or if there will be limits on overseas player retention.

Additionally, while the auction purse for each team has not been officially announced, it is expected to be between INR 115 and 120 crore.

Uncapped Player Retention Rule

The IPL is also considering reintroducing the uncapped player retention rule. This rule allows teams to retain players who have either retired or have not played international cricket for five years. This could be beneficial for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in retaining their iconic captain, MS Dhoni, as an uncapped player. This would enable CSK to maintain a larger portion of their auction budget.

Dhoni has not yet confirmed his participation in the next season. If he decides to play, this rule could provide significant support for the five-time champions. He has already passed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad in anticipation of IPL 2024.
