Yashasvi Jaiswal, India’s young batting sensation, has etched his name into the history books by breaking Virender Sehwag’s long-standing record for the fastest half-century by an Indian opener in Test cricket. The 22-year-old achieved this remarkable feat on Day 4 of the second Test against Bangladesh at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

Jaiswal Surpasses Sehwag’s Record

Yashasvi Jaiswal reached his 50 in just 31 balls, surpassing Sehwag’s record of 32 balls for the fastest half-century by an Indian opener in Test cricket. His explosive start set the tone for India’s innings, leaving Bangladesh’s bowlers scrambling for answers.

With this knock, Jaiswal now stands among the fastest half-century makers in Indian Test history. Only Rishabh Pant (28 balls) and Kapil Dev (30 balls) have scored quicker fifties for India. Jaiswal also matched Shardul Thakur’s record for a 31-ball half-century, cementing his place among India’s elite.

Fastest Fifties for India in Tests (by balls faced):

  • 28 balls – Rishabh Pant vs Sri Lanka
  • 30 balls – Kapil Dev vs Pakistan
  • 31 balls – Shardul Thakur vs England
  • 31 balls – Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Bangladesh
  • 32 balls – Virender Sehwag vs England

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Impactful Knock

Jaiswal’s blistering half-century not only shattered records but also kept the momentum firmly in India’s favour. After Rohit’s dismissal, Shubman Gill joined Jaiswal at the crease, and together they powered India past the 100-run mark in under 11 overs. Their 67-run partnership continued to pile the pressure on the Bangladeshi bowlers, who struggled to adapt to India’s aggressive approach.

Despite Jaiswal’s eventual dismissal to Hasan Mahmud, his innings had already inflicted significant damage. Bangladesh’s bowlers were left with little room to breathe as India quickly closed in on their target. Earlier in the day, Bangladesh had been bowled out for 233 runs in their first innings, leaving the hosts in a commanding position.
