The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently brought back an old rule allowing players who have been retired for over five years to be considered uncapped. This rule means that franchises can retain such players as uncapped, giving them more flexibility in building their squads.

Was This Rule Made for MS Dhoni?

Many people believe this rule was brought back for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the legendary Indian cricketer. Dhoni retired from international cricket after the 2019 ODI World Cup, but he still plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). This rule allows CSK to keep Dhoni for INR 4 crore, giving them more money to buy other players in the upcoming auction.

Although Dhoni has not said much about his future in the IPL, the timing of this rule change seems to be in CSK’s favour. It helps them retain Dhoni at a lower price while not disturbing their budget more heading into the mega auction.

Mohammad Kaif’s Opinion on the Rule

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif shared his thoughts on this rule change. He believes Dhoni’s importance to the game makes him deserving of such special rules. Dhoni has led CSK to five IPL titles and remains a major influence in the league.

“We will get to see MS Dhoni playing again. He is fit, he is batting aggressively and is good behind the gloves too. As long as he wants to play, the rules will keep getting changed. You got to change the rules, or do whatever you want, to let MS Dhoni play if he wants to play, he is that big of a player and match-winner for CSK,” Kaif told Star Sports.

Kaif also said that Dhoni always thinks about the team first. Even though keeping him for INR 4 crore may seem unusual, Kaif pointed out that Dhoni doesn’t care much about money.

“If he’s fit and playing good, why not? Dhoni himself says he doesn’t need money. He has said that he will do what the team management wants. Yes, retaining him for INR 4 crore does look a little weird, but you have a chance to retain him, regardless.”

“Everyone knows the rule has been changed because of him. And why not? Dhoni is that sort of a player,” Kaif added.

With Dhoni still in great shape and this new rule in place, it looks like fans will see him continue playing for as long as he wishes.
