After Babar Azam stepped down from Pakistan’s white-ball captaincy, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is actively searching for a replacement. With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 set to take place in Pakistan next February, finding a new leader is a top priority.
Saud Shakeel and Fakhar Zaman Lead the Race
According to reports from Geo Super, the Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB is impressed by the recent performances of Saud Shakeel and Fakhar Zaman. Both players are now seen as strong contenders to take over Babar’s role.
Saud Shakeel, in particular, made a significant impact during the recent Test series against Bangladesh, where he was named vice-captain. His solid performances have caught the attention of the board.
Fakhar Zaman, on the other hand, has experience leading Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He also has the backing of several cricket pundits in Pakistan who believe he is ready for a bigger leadership role.
Rizwan Ruled Out Due to Workload Concerns
Although there were earlier reports suggesting Mohammad Rizwan as a front-runner for the captaincy, it seems that the PCB is reconsidering.
Head coach Gary Kirsten reportedly advised against Rizwan’s appointment, citing concerns over managing his workload. This has opened the door for other candidates, like Saud Shakeel and Fakhar Zaman, to take center stage.
Agha Salman Also in Contention
In addition to Shakeel and Zaman, Agha Salman has also impressed the PCB. His recent form and ability to perform under pressure have placed him in the running for a leadership role.
Pakistan is scheduled to play a Test series against England at home, where Shan Masood will serve as captain. However, with a crucial three-match ODI series against Australia beginning on November 4, the PCB needs to appoint a new white-ball captain soon to ensure the team is well-prepared for upcoming challenges.
