New Zealand Cricket has officially announced its squad for the much-anticipated three-match Test series against India, kicking off on October 16 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This series is part of the ongoing World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle and promises to be a competitive affair.
Injury Concerns and Captaincy Changes
A significant setback for the Black Caps is the absence of their star batter, Kane Williamson, who is facing a groin strain. The injury, which surfaced during the second Test against Sri Lanka, has forced Williamson to delay his travel to India as he requires time for rehabilitation. He could join the team later in the series if all goes well.
In light of Williamson’s absence, uncapped batter Mark Chapman has been included as a cover. Additionally, the team will see a new captain at the helm. Tom Latham has been appointed as the full-time Test captain following Tim Southee’s resignation from the role after New Zealand’s recent 2-0 defeat in Sri Lanka.
The squad will experience some changes during the series. All-rounder Michael Bracewell is available only for the first Test, as he will return home for the birth of his second child. Ish Sodhi will take his place for the remaining Tests, adding more spin options for the team.
Following the opening Test in Bengaluru, the team will head to Pune for the second Test, commencing on October 24. The final match of the series will take place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 1.
