Shaheen Afridi and Babar Azam are expected to be dropped from Pakistan’s squad for the second Test against England, which begins on October 15 at Multan Cricket Stadium. This decision follows Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the first Test despite posting over 500 runs in their first innings.
Babar Azam managed only 35 runs across two innings, while Shaheen Afridi could take just one wicket throughout the match. Pakistan’s poor form continued with their sixth consecutive Test loss.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is consulting with chairman Mohsin Naqvi before finalizing the squad. Discussions between the selection committee, captain, and head coach have already concluded, and the squad announcement is expected today.
Reports also indicate that two additional spinners might be added to the side to strengthen the bowling attack.
Pakistan’s struggles are not limited to Test cricket. The team’s performance has dipped significantly across all formats, with their downfall beginning after the T20 World Cup 2022.
Their lowest point came earlier this year in the 2024 T20 World Cup when they suffered an embarrassing defeat in their opening match against the USA, a non-Test-playing nation.
With the second Test just around the corner, Pakistan will be hoping that new players and strategies can turn things around and help them regain some momentum.
