In a shocking turn of events, India slumped to their lowest-ever Test total at home, getting bowled out for just 46 runs in the ongoing first Test against New Zealand at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium. This dismal performance overtakes their previous home low of 75, recorded against the West Indies in Delhi back in 1987.

A Historic Low for India in Test Cricket

The 46-run collapse now stands as India’s third-lowest total in Test cricket overall. Their lowest Test score remains the 36 they managed against Australia in Adelaide during the 2020/21 series under Virat Kohli’s leadership.

Below is a look at India’s five lowest Test scores to date:

  1. 36 vs Australia, Adelaide (2020)
  2. 42 vs England, Lord’s (1974)
  3. 46 vs New Zealand, Bengaluru (2024)*
  4. 58 vs Australia, Brisbane (1947)
  5. 58 vs England, Manchester (1952)

A Day to Forget for the Indian Batters

India’s innings fell apart right from the start as skipper Rohit Sharma was the first to fall, bowled while trying to advance down the pitch. Following Rohit’s dismissal, wickets fell in quick succession, with India losing their entire batting lineup in a domino effect.

The collapse was further compounded by the fact that five batters—Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, R Ashwin, Sarfaraz Khan, and Ravindra Jadeja—failed to open their accounts, making it the joint-highest number of ducks for Indian batters in a home Test innings.

Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant offered the only resistance, scoring 20 runs off 49 balls, including two boundaries. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent the team from registering a humiliating score.

New Zealand Seamers Shine

New Zealand’s bowlers made the most of the overcast conditions at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Matt Henry and William Rourke led the charge, picking up four wickets each, while veteran pacer Tim Southee chipped in with one. The Indian batters found it tough to negotiate the movement off the pitch, resulting in a historic low that will haunt them for some time.
