Virat Kohli has added another feather to his cap by becoming the fourth Indian cricketer to cross 9000 Test runs. The 35-year-old achieved the milestone on day three of the opening Test against New Zealand at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Kohli reached the landmark with a single off the bowling of Will O’Rourke, cementing his place among India’s greatest Test batters.
With this achievement, Kohli now stands behind Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Rahul Dravid (13,288), and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122) on India’s all-time Test run list. He batted at No.3 in both innings of the Test, filling in for Shubman Gill, who missed the match due to a neck injury. While Kohli fell for a duck in the first innings, the former skipper came back determined in the second, looking to stabilize India’s batting.

India Facing a Steep Challenge Against New Zealand
The hosts were set a challenging task of scoring 356 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Rohit Sharma (52) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (35) provided a decent start, but both batters departed early, leaving Kohli with the responsibility to steer the innings. Sarfaraz Khan later joined him, and the duo put together a 100 plus partnership.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s batters laid a solid foundation earlier in the match. Rachin Ravindra powered his way to 134 off just 157 balls, smashing boundaries at will. He brought up his century with a crisp four off Ravichandran Ashwin, providing a vital boost for the visitors. Tim Southee also chipped in with a quick-fire 65, pushing New Zealand’s lead close to 300.
Virat Kohli, meanwhile departed for 70 runs on the last ball of the day’s game. Sarfaraz Khan will continue with unbeaten 70 on the third day of the match.
