Indian Cricket Team has included spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar in their squad for the second and third Tests against New Zealand. The second Test is set to begin on October 24 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) stadium in Pune. However, Sundar’s inclusion in the playing XI will depend on the conditions, and it is unlikely that India will field the same line-up as the first Test.

The all-rounder is currently representing Tamil Nadu in the ongoing 2024-25 Ranji Trophy. After completing Tamil Nadu’s game against Delhi, Sundar will join the Indian team in Pune. Meanwhile, Sportstar has reported that Tamil Nadu players Baba Indrajith and Sai Sudharsan will leave for Australia after the Delhi match, as they are part of the India A squad for the upcoming series.

Washington Sundar’s Performance Chart

Despite his good performances in the limited Test opportunities he received, Sundar has often found it hard to secure a spot in India’s red-ball squad. In four Test matches, the off-spinner has accumulated 265 runs at a healthy average of 66.25 and has also taken six wickets. However, the strong presence of experienced spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja has limited his chances in the Test format.

Washington Sundar has been more active in India’s white-ball squads, playing a vital role in T20Is and ODIs. Known for his consistency, he has become a dependable all-rounder in India’s limited-overs setup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Sundar’s addition in an official release, stating:

“The Men’s Selection Committee on Sunday added Mr Washington Sundar to India’s squad for the remainder of the IDFC First Bank Test series against New Zealand. Mr Washington Sundar will link up with the squad in Pune ahead of the second Test.”
