Gary Kirsten’s time as Pakistan’s white-ball coach has reportedly come to an abrupt end, creating confusion just ahead of the team’s tour to Australia.

Various media reports on October 28 (Monday) suggest that Kirsten has resigned from his role, though the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has yet to release an official statement. Interestingly, the PCB had earlier announced that Kirsten would travel with the team to Australia on the same date.

The timing of this development could not have been worse for Pakistan, as they had only finalized Mohammad Rizwan as their white-ball captain on October 27 (Sunday). With the Australian tour set to begin in a week, the departure of their white-ball coach leaves the team scrambling for alternatives.

According to Cricbuzz, Kirsten had requested the PCB to appoint David Reid as a High-Performance coach, but the board declined his proposal. This disagreement is believed to be one of the primary reasons for Kirsten’s resignation.

The former South African player and India’s World Cup-winning coach was brought in to strengthen Pakistan’s white-ball unit. However, the team struggled under his guidance, losing a T20I series to England and failing to qualify for the Super 8 stage in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Interim Coaching Solutions

With Kirsten’s sudden exit, the PCB may have to rely on Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s current red-ball coach, to take charge of the white-ball team as well. Another name doing the rounds in the media is Aaqib Javed, the former Pakistan pacer, who is also part of the national selection committee.
