KL Rahul’s time with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has come to an end after three seasons. Although the franchise offered him the top retention bracket for IPL 2024, Rahul has reportedly decided to move on due to personal and professional reasons.

The wicketkeeper-batter was at the helm of LSG’s journey from their debut season in 2022. Under his captaincy, the team reached the playoffs in their first two seasons. However, IPL 2024 proved to be a setback, with LSG finishing seventh on the points table, marking their worst performance so far.

Strained Relationship with Franchise Owner?

Speculations about tension between Rahul and the franchise gained traction during the 2024 season after an incident involving Sanjiv Goenka, the franchise owner. Following a defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, the two were seen engaging in a heated conversation.

In August, Rahul reportedly traveled to Kolkata to meet Goenka, sparking hopes that the differences had been resolved. However, recent reports from The Times of India indicate that the Indian batter has parted ways with LSG, despite the franchise’s attempt to retain him.

“LSG were ready to offer Rahul the top retention deal, but he decided to move on,” a source told TOI.

Multiple Franchises Eye Rahul for IPL 2025

Rahul’s departure has already stirred interest among other teams, with at least four franchises – Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings – keen to secure his services. His experience leading teams like Punjab Kings and LSG, combined with his role as a stand-in captain for India, makes him a valuable option for the upcoming IPL 2025 mega option.

Rahul has established himself as one of the most consistent batters in the IPL, accumulating 4,683 runs across 132 matches at an average of 45.47 and a strike rate of 134.61. His tally includes 37 fifties and four centuries, with a personal best of 132 runs against RCB in 2020. Although his strike rate has come under scrutiny, teams with power-packed line-ups will likely benefit from his technical prowess, especially under challenging batting conditions.

Fans React to KL Rahul’s Decision

Fans on social media expressed support for Rahul’s move, with many suggesting that his decision reflects self-respect. Some fans believe the fallout with LSG management during IPL 2024 made it inevitable for Rahul to part ways.

With Rahul now available, the IPL 2025 option promises an intense battle among franchises looking to add the experienced batter to their squad.
