In a recent outburst on social media, former Indian batter and current cricket analyst Sanjay Manjrekar expressed frustration with the Indian team management’s decision to push Sarfaraz Khan down the order in the ongoing third Test against New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
Manjrekar questioned the choice to send Sarfaraz, who is currently in good form, to bat at No. 8, arguing it compromised his impact on the game.
Sanjay Manjrekar’s Reaction to India’s Strategy
Taking to X on Saturday, November 2, Manjrekar criticized the call to adjust Sarfaraz’s position purely to maintain a left-right batting combination, pointing out that the decision disregarded the batter’s strengths. He noted Sarfaraz’s impressive start in international cricket, where he scored three half-centuries and a notable 150 in Bangalore, making him a solid choice to counter spin at an earlier slot.
“A guy in form, has 3 fifties in his first 3 Tests, gets 150 in the Bangalore Test, a good player of spin, pushed back in the order to keep left & right combination?? Makes no sense. Sarfraz now walking in at no 8! Poor call by India,” wrote Manjrekar on X.
Jadeja Promoted, Sarfaraz Struggles
In Saturday’s innings, the Indian team chose to promote all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja over Sarfaraz, allowing him to bat at No. 7. However, Jadeja was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, managing only 14 runs off 25 deliveries before getting dismissed by Glenn Phillips, with Daryl Mitchell taking a simple catch.
Sarfaraz, stepping in at No. 8, faced a challenging situation and could not get off the mark, eventually falling for a four-ball duck to Ajaz Patel, caught by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell.
Meanwhile, India ended their first innings with a slim lead of 28 runs, as they were bowled out for 263 in response to New Zealand’s 235.
