Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has voiced his opinion on the leadership setup for India’s upcoming Test series against Australia. Speaking on Sports Tak, Gavaskar suggested that if Rohit Sharma misses the first Test, Jasprit Bumrah should take over as captain for the entire series.
Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to miss the series opener against Australia, scheduled from November 22 at the Optus Stadium in Perth, due to personal reasons. This absence could place additional responsibilities on India’s squad, which is gearing up for a tough five-match series.
“It’s crucial for the captain to be present from the start. If Rohit is unavailable for the opening match, the vice-captain would face extra pressure,” Gavaskar commented.
“If Rohit misses the first Test, I believe the selectors should appoint Bumrah as the captain for the full series, allowing Rohit to rejoin only as a player when he returns.”
At a recent press conference, Rohit hinted at the uncertainty surrounding his availability for the Perth Test. After India’s recent 0-3 home defeat to New Zealand, he addressed questions about his potential absence, saying:
“I am not too sure about Perth. But fingers crossed.”
India’s Hurdle for World Test Championship Final
India needs to win at least four of the five Tests against Australia to stay in contention for the World Test Championship Final. However, Gavaskar expressed doubts about India achieving a 4-0 victory.
“India cannot beat Australia 4-0 in the series. If they do, I would be over the moon, but realistically, winning 4-0 is very tough,” Gavaskar remarked.
He further encouraged the team to focus on winning matches in Australia without stressing over the margin.
“Whether it’s 1-0, 2-0, or 3-1, just focus on winning the series. That’s what Indian fans are waiting for,” he added.
Gavaskar’s words reflect the optimism and pressure surrounding India’s quest to reclaim its stature in Test cricket, especially against a strong Australian squad led by Pat Cummins.
As the series approaches, the debate over India’s leadership will continue, but Gavaskar’s suggestion of Bumrah’s captaincy has added an interesting twist to the team’s preparation for the high-stakes showdown.
