The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have found themselves at the center of a controversy after allowing New Zealand’s rising star Rachin Ravindra to train at their academy. This move came ahead of the three-match Test series between India and New Zealand, where Ravindra’s brilliant performance helped New Zealand to a historic 3-0 whitewash against India.
Rachin Ravindra recently made headlines with his outstanding performances, amassing 256 runs at an average of over 51, which included a century in the Test series. His impressive display of skill and maturity on Indian soil drew much attention, and many believed that his training at the CSK Academy played a role in his success. Despite being released by CSK ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, Rachin Ravindra was allowed to train at the academy, a decision that many, including former CSK player Robin Uthappa, have questioned.
Robin Uthappa’s Concerns Over National Interests
While Uthappa acknowledged CSK’s player-focused approach, he raised concerns about the franchise’s decision to support a foreign player against India. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Uthappa emphasized that while CSK always looks after its players, national interests should come first, especially when the foreign player is performing against India.
Uthappa said, “Rachin Ravindra came here and practiced at the Chennai Super Kings Academy. CSK is a beautiful franchise that will always look after its franchise players, but a line has to be drawn where the interest of the country comes ahead of your franchise players, especially when he is a foreign player and comes and plays against our country.”
Despite his criticism, Uthappa praised Ravindra’s cricketing skills, particularly his match-winning 134 off 157 balls on a challenging Bengaluru pitch, calling it one of the best knocks by an overseas player in India. Uthappa concluded by stating that Ravindra’s future in New Zealand cricket looks bright, but he urged CSK to reconsider such decisions in the future, keeping national interests at the forefront.
