Gautam Gambhir, currently India’s head coach across all cricket formats, could lose his position as the Test head coach if India performs poorly in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series against Australia.

As per a report by Dainik Jagran’s Abhishek Tripathi, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering changes to the coaching lineup for the red-ball format, potentially bringing in VVS Laxman to lead the Test team. Laxman, who is currently guiding India’s T20I team in South Africa, is reportedly being eyed for the role if Gambhir’s team does not deliver.

This decision comes after India’s recent 3-0 Test series defeat at home to New Zealand, a rare occurrence since India last lost a home series twelve years ago. The team’s strategy, including a heavy focus on spin-friendly pitches, faced widespread criticism, as this approach failed to secure victories. Reports also suggest a potential rift between captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir, with BCCI holding a six-hour meeting involving key Indian cricket stakeholders to discuss the team’s performance and future direction.

Gautam Gambhir’s Mixed Journey as Head Coach

Gautam Gambhir took on the role of head coach during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in July, after showing promise as the Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor in the IPL. However, his tenure has had mixed results, with India experiencing both successes and setbacks. While the team has performed strongly in T20I matches, they faced challenging losses, including being swept by Sri Lanka in ODIs and New Zealand in Tests.

For now, Gambhir’s future as Test head coach hinges on India’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Should India win the series, draw, or lose narrowly, Gambhir could retain his position. However, the BCCI is exploring options, including appointing Gambhir as a white-ball-only coach, though it is unclear if he would accept this role.
