For the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have decided not to go all-out after high-profile players like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer.
According to CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, both Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul are likely to attract high bids from many teams with bigger purse, which ultimately breaks down the chances of CSK targeting them in the mega-auction.
The IPL 2025 Mega Auction is set to take place on November 24 and 25 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“I don’t think we’ll be able to get them at the auction” – CSK CEO
Kasi Viswanathan explained that retentions have impacted CSK’s budget for the auction and hence they can’t get the best Indian players in the upcoming auction.
“After discussions with our captain Ruturaj, MS (Dhoni), and coach Stephen Fleming, we decided to keep players who have been instrumental in CSK’s success and stability over the years,” he said in an interview with former CSK player Ambati Rayudu on Provoke TV.
“It was very easy to decide on the retentions — Gaikwad, Jaddu, MS, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana. But we knew that if we retain these players, we would have a lesser purse to go into the auction. We knew that we wouldn’t be able to compete with the other teams when it comes to the best of the Indian players. I mean, we will still try, but i don’t think we’ll be able to get them at the auction,” he added.
The IPL franchises had a deadline of October 31 to submit their retained player lists, with a maximum of six players allowed per team, five of whom could be capped. This limit guided CSK’s decisions as they worked to maintain a strong balance between experience and budget considerations.
