The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide a written explanation for its decision to withdraw from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to be held in Pakistan. According to Geo News, the BCCI had earlier informed the ICC verbally about its decision, citing security concerns.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in response, requested the ICC to share India’s written reply. Sources revealed that Pakistan might demand evidence supporting India’s reasons for not traveling. The ICC is expected to make a final decision after reviewing India’s explanation.
“If India fails to provide proper reasons, they may be asked to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. Otherwise, another team could replace them in the event,” sources told Geo News.
Uncertainty Over the Champions Trophy 2025
Pakistan, the defending champions of the ICC Champions Trophy, is gearing up to host the event. However, the uncertainty surrounding India’s participation has raised questions about the tournament’s schedule and venue.
The PCB has planned to kick off the Champions Trophy trophy tour from Islamabad on November 16, despite India’s firm stance against traveling to Pakistan. Earlier this year, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla stated that India would only participate if the Indian government granted permission.
Last year’s Asia Cup was held in a hybrid model, with Pakistan hosting some matches and India playing their games in Sri Lanka. A similar approach for the Champions Trophy has been speculated, but PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently denied any discussions about such an arrangement.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that South Africa and the UAE are potential backup venues if Pakistan pulls out or if the tournament is moved to a neutral location. In such a scenario, the PCB could withdraw its participation, leading to further complications for the event.
