India suffered a major scare ahead of the first Test against Australia as KL Rahul was injured during a practice match at the WACA ground on Friday. The 32-year-old batter was hit on his right elbow by a rising delivery from pacer Prasidh Krishna.

After consulting with the team physio, Rahul left the field for scans, raising doubts about his availability for the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting November 22.

Rahul scored 29 runs before the injury occurred. If regular captain Rohit Sharma misses the first Test, Rahul is expected to open the innings.

A BCCI official said:

“About Rahul…it’s just happened, so will take some time to assess (his elbow).”

The injury comes at a crucial time for Rahul, who is eyeing a return to the Test team. He was dropped from the playing XI after the match against New Zealand in Bengaluru last month. Rahul’s last Test century came in December 2023 against South Africa at Centurion. Since then, he has managed just two half-centuries in nine innings.

Virat Kohli Undergoes Scans But Continues Playing

Meanwhile, star batter Virat Kohli reportedly underwent scans on Thursday for an unspecified issue, as per a report by The Sydney Morning Herald. However, Kohli took part in the match simulation and scored 15 runs before getting out.

“There are no concerns as of now with Virat Kohli,” said the BCCI official, easing fears about his availability.

Kohli has been struggling with form in Test cricket. His last Test hundred came against the West Indies in July 2023 at Port of Spain. Since then, the 36-year-old has scored only two half-centuries in 14 innings, raising questions about his recent performances.

India’s preparation for the five-match Test series has already faced setbacks, and Rahul’s injury adds to their worries. Fans will be hoping for a quick recovery for both players as the team gears up to face a strong Australian side.
