Australian batter Travis Head has supported Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s decision to miss the first Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rohit opted out of the match in Perth to spend time with his family after the birth of his second child.
Speaking ahead of the series opener at the Optus Stadium, Head emphasized the importance of family milestones, stating he would have made the same choice if in a similar situation. He said, as quoted by Revsportz:
“Hundred per cent, I support Rohit’s decision. I would have done the same in the same situation. We sacrifice a lot of things as cricketers. While we live a privileged life and are well looked after, we also miss many important moments. You don’t get that time back. Hopefully, he returns at some stage in this series.”
Jasprit Bumrah to Lead India in Rohit’s Absence
Rohit Sharma has informed the BCCI about his unavailability for the first Test, prioritizing his family. In his absence, vice-captain and lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah will take over as captain for the match, which begins on Friday, November 22.
Head also highlighted the balance required between personal and professional commitments in a cricketer’s life. He added:
“It’s a team-first mentality, but also about understanding when it’s better to step back and recover properly.”
With Rohit unavailable, India will look to Bumrah’s leadership and the team’s depth to start the series strongly against a formidable Australian side.
