Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has finally opened up about his departure from Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Pant dismissed claims that money was the reason behind his exit from the franchise he led in IPL 2021, 2022, and 2024.

Pant, who is currently preparing for the Test series against Australia starting November 22 in Perth, responded to former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar’s comments on social media. Gavaskar, speaking on Star Sports, had suggested that financial disagreements might have led to Pant’s release. However, Pant clarified his stance by posting on X (formerly Twitter):

“My retention wasn’t about the money for sure that I can say.”

Sunil Gavaskar’s Statement and DC’s Retention List

During his Star Sports appearance, Gavaskar mentioned that Delhi Capitals might still want Pant back in their squad despite the release. He speculated that discussions over the retention fee could have caused a rift, leading to the decision. Gavaskar highlighted that such situations are not uncommon when franchises and players negotiate terms before retention.

Meanwhile, DC announced their retention list ahead of the mega auction, retaining Axar Patel (₹16.5 crore), Kuldeep Yadav (₹13.5 crore), Tristan Stubbs (₹10 crore), and Abhishek Porel (₹4 crore). Pant, who is set to go under the hammer, is expected to fetch a massive price at the auction, scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Although DC can use the Right to Match (RTM) card to bring Pant back, it appears unlikely, given the circumstances. As one of the most explosive batters and a proven leader, Pant could end up with a new franchise for IPL 2025.
