The Indian team for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy looks different from the squad that won the last two editions in Australia. Ajinkya Rahane, who led India to a historic series win on their last tour, is no longer part of the setup. Another big absence is Cheteshwar Pujara, a batter who troubled the Australian bowlers in past tours with his incredible patience and batting skills.

Pujara was India’s star in the 2018-19 series, scoring 524 runs, including three centuries, and winning the Player of the Series award. In the following tour, he may not have scored as much but played crucial innings, often wearing out the Australian attack by spending hours at the crease.

Hazlewood Relieved by Pujara’s Absence

Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood admitted he was glad Pujara was not part of this year’s Indian team. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, he said:

“I am happy that Cheteshwar Pujara is not here. He is someone who bats long and makes you earn his wicket every single time. He has done really well in Australia before.”

Pujara’s record in Australia speaks for itself. In 11 Tests, he has scored 993 runs at an average of 46.28. This is the first time since 2014 that Pujara will not feature in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Hazlewood, however, praised the strength of the Indian side, noting the depth in their squad.

“There are always first-class young players coming into the Indian team. There’s so much competition for spots, so the playing XI always has unbelievable players,” he added.

While India has talented young batters ready to step up, Pujara’s absence will surely be felt. For the Australian bowlers, though, it might just be a welcome relief.
